Molecular biologist Dr. Carl Peters is under pressure on two fronts his research grants are disappearing and his marriage is falling apart. But when medical researchers discover that genetically modified animal feed has tainted the food chain, he finally gets the funding he always dreamed of.

Dr. Peters discovers the reason behind the cancer link with GM food, but it's so crazy, he barely believes it himself.

Transfection is a 5,700 word, 23-page old-school SF short story, starring a molecular biologist who makes a discovery that shocks the world, only to find his life under threat. It takes in militant vegans, corruption, homelessness, university politics, radiation, the celebrity-obsessed media, and a shadowy conspiracy.

Praise for Transfection

"I laughed out loud at some of the antics as I was reading. Transfection is well worth the price-tag...yet another well written and, dare I say again, thought provoking, tale from David Gaughran.." --Heather L. Faville, Doubleshot Reviews

"Well written...a polished product." -- Tracy Cook, Booked Up Reviews"Very strong images...a haunting quality...I totally did not expect that ending. I really didn't see it coming...I recommend this to people who enjoy well written sci-fi.." -- LE Olteano, Butterfly Books

Transfection eBook David Gaughran

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Although I would term this story a thriller more than a science fiction I have to say it was good and very suspenseful. The story was short but I felt the author was successful in building up the small events to eventually reveal the final bigger one. The story is about Dr. Peters who makes a big discovery while researching genetically modified food and how that discovery affects the industry and people.
I would say this would make a fun short read for anybody who wants something suspenseful but short at the same time.

Transfection eBook David Gaughran Reviews

Perfectly executed. Truly original storyline in my favorite genre, not so easy to find. Should be read by science and mystery fans, with a shocking twist of an ending.
The brevity of this story reminds me of a story from the original "Twilight Zone" TV series. I think I would also have enjoyed this as a longer story, but everything was covered, and drawing it out would have added words, but probably not much more. Part of the impact was the concise, to-the-point telling, leading up to the ending with a twist. I would be happy to have more stories like this to read when I wanted something for pure entertainment that doesn't require large blocks of time.
Like the other reviewer, I agree that Transfection is well-written, intriguing, and fast-paced. The first quarter of the story is a bit heavy on exposition and description, but it really picks up after that (and to be honest, in a story of this length, the slow start isn't a huge issue). On the bright side, I thought Gaughran did a pretty good job showing versus telling, for the most part. For example, I liked his use of words in regard to gradually showing the dissolution of Dr. Peters's marriage and how he "did not even hear his wife's car reverse out of the driveway."

Some aspects of the story weigh more on the "fiction" end of the "science-fiction" scale than others, but all in all, it's very well researched. Besides, I quickly forgot about any issue of plausibility when the story got into full swing (and I'm a scientist!), as it took some very interesting turns and raised a few very interesting questions that piqued my curiosity and compelled me to follow Dr. Peters's tale to the end.

I don't want to give anything away, and as much as I'd have loved for it to go on, the story ends on a fitting note. I'd definitely recommend giving Transfection a shot.
I found Transfection to be a marvelous satire dealing with a particular area of scientific advancement, the good and bad of it and the extremes some levels of society will go to, to protest those advances. In a twist on the scientific horror story where one man's discovery manages to change an entire societal ideal---that man's discovery is met with yet another significant discovery -- one more dark than HIS ideal can cope with. I truly enjoyed it. If you're looking for the diversion of a short story with some bite, this is it.
Without having a spoiler, if you are looking for something to read during your lunch break at work like I was, you should consider picking this one up. David Gaughran tells a pretty good and tight tale with this short story, and you can quickly relate to the characters and the scenarios which is pretty hard to do in a short story format actually, I could believe this short story could serve as the outline for a full-length novel. The dialogue is succinct and to the point without droning on for word-count sake.

I picked this up for free in the store and, as I type this review, the price is 99 cents - I think you will get a little more than 99 cents worth of entertainment from this one.
A very interesting sci-fi read that, in my opinion, forces the readers to take a look inside themselves to decide how they would behave/react in a similar scenario. The battles that the MC goes through is quite heartbreaking, right up to the end of the book when he is trying to shout from the rooftops the "truth" that no one wants to hear.

I think my favorite part of this story though (it totally made me laugh) was how the Vegetarians were having to try and figure out what they could actually eat that wouldn't make them look like hypocrites.

Great story, I will be reading more by this author.
I seldom write negative reviews about a book. For this book, I am forced to make an exception. Even though this is a short story, the author needs to take a few extra pages to more fully develop some aspects of the storyline. Moreover, while this book is science fiction, not science fact, there are elements of the story that are not plausible even in a work of fiction. And lastly, the ending, well the ending was unsatisfactory. Bottom line, don’t waste your time or money on this book, there are better choices out there.
